MATH TALK IN KINDERGARTEN!!
It is amazzzing what our youngest learners can think, talk about, and all the knowledge they have acquired so far this year!! We will soon begin working to solve word problems. The children will work together to read the problem, draw pictures or use manipulatives, and write math equations to solve the problems. Everyday they will gain a deeper understanding of how to compose and decompose numbers. They will have a better understanding of what it means to add and how we use the + symbol to show that operation. They will be able to explain that the = symbol means that two amounts can have an equal value (not that they are the "same", but that they have "the same value"). As we continue to work on refining these skills we will move forward with working on developing our original math stories/word problems.
At home, you can ask your child to practice these skills with their breakfast cereal or small toys. Give them a certain number of objects (5-10). Ask your child to show you the partners for the number. For example, if you give them six pieces of cereal they may show groups of 3 and 3, 4 and 2, or 5 and 1. These are all partners of six. This "game" will help your child's understanding that numbers can be composed and decomposed. The best part of all, when your "game" is complete... they get to gobble up their math tools!!! YUM!!! Have fun with math and your little mathmatician!!!
